Oral History Space Lunchtime Presentation Series Day 4

Sunday May 16th, 2010

Noon: CHIEF JOHNNY JACKSON and CHIEF WILBUR SLOCKISH, JR. Klikitat-Cascade Chief Johnny Jackson has served his tribe along the Columbia River for over twenty years. He is joined by Chief Wilbur Slockish, Jr. who eight years ago took his father’s place alongside Jackson. Their work to educate the public on Native fishing rights takes them across Washington and Oregon, including the Warm Springs and Yakama Reservations. As founding members of the Indigenous Environmental Network, they have traveled around the country to speak out against nuclear production and nuclear waste storage on reservations. In their efforts to protect their people’s traditional spiritual sites from development threats, Jackson and Slockish recently co-founded the Mount Hood Sacred Lands Alliance with the Cascade Geographic Society. They will focus on environmental issues, sharing some of the instructions handed down to their tribe from their creator, and how these instructions influence their actions and lifestyle. The Klikitat-Cascade people consider these instructions an integral oral history component in their culture.

12:45: DAVID VANADIA works with stories. He has performed internationally as a storyteller at venues including the Yukon International Storytelling Festival, Digital Storytelling Festival, Trenton Avant Guard Festival, and NYC Spoken Word Festival. As a narrative practitioner he has conducted trainings and consulted for companies of all sizes, including Reader’s Digest, TMP Worldwide, Lockheed Martin, and John Wiley & Sons Publishing. David will discuss the history of the modern storytelling movement. You'll learn who's who and what's what in today's storytelling landscape, including storytelling festivals, storytelling in business, storytelling in technology and modern storytelling trends.

Presentations will occur in Roosevelt Square (SW Park between Jefferson & Madison) at the base of the Teddy Roosevelt Statue. Bring your lunch, questions, curiosity, observations, ideas, and friends!
